I always recommend that you apply creams, perfume etc. first and wait until it’s dry before putting on your jewellery.
The pH value of your skin and the products you use in your daily life also play a role in how quickly the gold plating breaks down, which is why the durability of gold-plating varies a lot.
For example, I often experience that a ring wears down quicker than a pair of earrings, as rings are often subjected to more blows and bumps than earrings. This is why I give all my rings an extra thick layer of gold plating so they last as long as possible.
